People's Caravan for Food Sovereignty 2004, Nepal

Press Statement
28th September 2004

(Denouncement of hated action on international delegates)

The international participants of people's Caravan 2004 upholding high banner of peoples' right to food, right to land and productive resources started their rally from Panjab to Delhi, Hariyana, Uttar Pradesh and Utaranchal of India and entered Nepal where they had lively interaction with peasants, women and common masses advancing towards Kathmandu. On their way to culminating conference in Kathmandu, When they reached 32 K.M. west near local Junge river of Dhading district, a group of Maoist Insurgents captured their three Jeeps on which they were traveling around 1 to 1.30 A.M. midnight and set two Jeeps on fire sprinkling petrol over the vehicles. There is no any reason and rational behind this hateful action. The international delegates traveling on the vehicles tried their best to convince armed group that they had come to participate in the international conference scheduled to hold in Kathmandu more than year before but they turn deaf ear to their plea. Instead they turned the delegates out of vehicles at gun point without allowing them to take their passport and their related papers, their bags and belongings mercilessly put everything ablaze.

The People's Caravan for Food Sovereignty is an anti-capitalist globalization movement initiated by common mass on their own. What message Maoist's such heinous act will produced by attacking on peaceful marchers denouncing anti imperialist shackles in more than 13 countries of different continents in the world? We had scheduled this programme one year before and call upon them to respect the norm of friendship any foreign delegates deserve. Apprised of the seriousness of the situation, we had planned to take care of our guest to reach the destination before the day breaks on which moist had called for Bandha. We, on behalf of All Nepal Peasants Association, All Nepal Women's Association, and South Asia Alliance for poverty Eradication strongly condemn this shameless attack of Maoist insurgents on international delegates violating all political ethics and norms. We are extremely sorry for this irresponsible and shocking act and apologize for such heinous act that took place in the land of Nepal.
We strongly call upon HMG/N to take into notice this event seriously and demand immediate compensation of all the unnecessary loses accrued upon foreign delegates.
