South Asia Alliance for Poverty Eradication (SAAPE)

Call of Action

Urgent Call of Action to the European Union with regard to President Musharraf’s visit to the European Parliament, Monday 21 January 2008

In the light of the upcoming exchange of views with President Musharraf in the European Parliament on Monday 21 January, jointly organised by the Committee of Foreign Affairs and the Delegation for relations with the countries of South Asia, the South Asia Alliance for Poverty Eradication (SAAPE) strongly urges the MEPs to take note of and support its urgent call of action vis-à-vis the situation in Pakistan:

  • We demand a neutral caretaker government endorsed by all the major political parties in Pakistan
  • We demand an autonomous Election Commission replacing the current one even if it requires further postponement of elections because we believe that only an independent Election Commission with full authority will ensure
free and fair elections in Pakistan
  • We demand reinstatement of the pre-emergency independent Judiciary
  • We support the demand for an independent UN inquiry into the assassination of Benazir Bhutto
  • We demand complete restoration of civil and political liberties, upholding of human rights, release of all political prisoners and free media
  • We demand an end to the “war on terror” which is only fuelling fundamentalism and extremism in Pakistan

We urge the EU to set up specific benchmarks, along the above lines, for its Election Observation Mission as the presence of external election monitors will not serve the purpose without internal structural redress in Pakistan SAAPE extends its continued support and solidarity to its fellow pro-democracy activists in Pakistan and believes that the above call of action is a pre-requisite to ensuring free and fair elections in Pakistan. It believes that the international community, including, the EU should pay heed to the voice of the people of Pakistan in order to facilitate a sustainable peace and democracy in the country as well as stability in the region of South Asia.
