National Press Club, Dhaka, Bangladesh

Asia Alliance for Poverty Eradication (SAAPE) and
Equity and Justice Working Group (Equity BD), Bangladesh
jointly organized the seminar on 'LDCs and Brussels
Programme of Action (BPoA)' in Dhaka.
In the introductory
speech, Dr Arjun K Karki of LDC Watch said there
were 24 least developed countries in 1971. But
now the number of LDCs has increased to 49 and the
rich countries are responsible for their deterioration,
he said. We were not poor. We were systemically
made poor. LDCs must apply 2P strategy
i.e Pressure and Partnership to gain benefit from
the international Programme of Actions and multilateral
development processes. More»

|
As the largest people's
assembly in South Asia, right before to the official
SAARC Summit, the People's SAARC 2008 has been convened
from 18 to 20 July 2008 in Colombo, Sri Lanka with
a grand success. Hundreds of women, workers, peasants,
urban and rural poor, youth and students, cultural
activists, scholars, politicians and representatives
of marginalised and excluded social groups and communities
from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives,
Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka gathered in Colombo,
Sri Lanka to manifest their common aspirations and
agendas and solidarity under the them of "Towards

Scientific
Agrarian Reform must for Sustained Economic Revolution
South Asia Regional
Conference on Food Sovereignty, Agrarian Reforms and
Peasants Rights Concluded

July 2008. Peasant leaders from different countries
of South Asia participating in South Asian Regional
Conference on Food Sovereignty, Agrarian Reform and
Peasants' Rights organised in Kathmandu, Nepal on
8-9 July 2008 have concluded that without Scientific
Agrarian Reform, there are remote chances of achieving
sustained economic revolution in the countries of
the region where agriculture is the mainstay of the
majority people living in rural areas. Therefore,
they urged the governments of the South Asia region
to devise policies for scientific agrarian reform
to fight against poverty and hunger and assure fundamental
rights of all citizens to food, energy, health and
education, including other economic, social and cultural

Participation
of SAAPE delegates at the CSO events organised in
Hokkaido, Japan from 4-9 July 2008 in relation to
G8 Summit
The
34th G8 summit took place in Toyako on the northern
island of Hokkaido, Japan from July 7-9, 2008. The
G8 is an unofficial forum bringing together the
heads of the richest industrialised countries: France,
Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United
States of America, Canada (since 1976), Russia (since
1998) and the President of the European Commission
(since 1981). It must be noted that the G8 countries
represent 14% of the world's population but control
2/3rd of global industry, 75 % of the world's military
budget and almost all nuclear weapons except Israel,
India and Pakistan.

JOIN
THE INTERNATIONAL PEOPLE'S SOLIDARITY DAYS
July 4-8, 2008, Hokkaido, Japan
The G8 Summit will be held
this year from July 7-9 in Toyako, Hokkaido, Japan. This
will be a culmination of a series of ministerial preparation
meeting beginning in March. The G8 Action Network, a network
of various Japanese organizations and movements, is calling
on all social movements, peasant organizations, women,
migrants, urban and rural poor, fisherfolk and civil society
from all over the world who are resisting free trade in
its many forms, war and militarism, the privatization
of essential services and natural resources, illegitimate
debt and the domination of global finance, and fighting
for and building real people based solutions to global
warming, to come and join in the week of action against
the G8 here in Japan. More»

Preparatory Meeting Concludes
Conveners'
Committee Formed
31 January 2008
Regional Conveners'
Committee has been formed at People's SAARC 2008 preparatory
meeting convened in Colombo on 31st of January 2008. This
Committee is mandated to take forward the necessary preparations
for organising People's SAARC 2008 at both country as well
as regional levels. This Committee consists of 15 members
representing all South Asian countries. The meeting was
participated by several civil society actors from South
Asian countries.

SAAPE Poverty Report
Launched in Brussels; Interaction on Bhutan held
The second Poverty Report
of the South Asia Alliance for Poverty Eradication (SAAPE)
titled "Poverty in South Asia 2006: Civil Society
Concerns" was launched in Brussels on November 8.
In the same event, a strategic discussion on "Bhutan:
Democratization amidst protracted Refugee Crisis"
was also organised . The event was organized in coordination
with SAAPE's Northern partner, Eurostep and facilitated
by the Europe External Policy Advisors (EEPA). More»

conference focuses on ways to sustain democracy
In a recent conference
on "Nepal: Looking beyond Kathmandu Challenges
and Opportunities for Peace-Building from Below"
held in Brussels, Belgium, participants examined how the
lot of Nepal's poorest can be improved as part of efforts
to ensure the peace agreement does not break down and
the regained democracy last April is sustained.

PEOPLE'S SAARC - 2007

Assembly
March 23rd to 25th 2007,

The First People's SAARC
concluded here on Sunday, issuing a 25-point Kathmandu
declaration. The declaration has urged all the parties
concerned to act together to fight against poverty, injustice,
imperialism and discrimination of gender, caste, religion,
language and ethnicity.

The next SAAPE
Annual General Assembly (GA) is being held
on 2-3 July 2006 in Kathmandu, Nepal . The GA will be
preceded by a one day meeting on 2nd during which Seminar
would be organised. Bearing in mind the recent historical
achievement of the Nepalese people, we have decide to
organise a seminar on the theme of 'Grass Roots
Democracy". It would include key-note
speakers and activists who participated in the recent
people's movement in Nepal, as well as speakers from
other countries, specifically youth representatives
involved in grass-roots democratic activities. It could
also include a sharing session on strategic planning

is an open meeting space for reflective thinking, democratic

world by capital and imperialism. It is committed to
building a World society in which fruitful relationships
among human kind and environmental considerations abound.
The motto for the WSF is "another world is possible".
The forum brings this slogan to life with its chosen
speakers, workshops, panels, debates, marches, and cultural
events. It provides an open platform for activists and
intellectuals alike to discuss strategies of resistance
to globalisation, and to present constructive alternatives.

PEACE AND
JUSTICE IN SOUTH ASIA conference
24-26 February
2006, Mumbai
A core group of Mumbai
based organisations who have been actively working
on Peace, Conflict, Security, Justice and other issues,
have come together as "Peace Mumbai" and
will be organising a conference on "Peace and
Justice in South Asia" from Feb 24-26, 2006 in
Mumbai, India. SAAPE is also co-organiser of this
event. The main themes of the conference are: War
and trade; the nuclear threat, gender violence, nationalism
and sovereignty; religion, communalism, terrorism
and conflicts in South Asia. There will be a plenary
devoted to discuss impact of neo liberal globalisation
on each country in the region giving rise to conflicts
and strife thus threatening the peace and justice.

Release all
political detainees and HR defenders: NGO Federation
of Nepal
NGO Federation of Nepal-an
umbrella organisation of over 2,600 NGOs across the
country-has demanded that the government release all
political detainees and human rights defenders immediately
and unconditionally.
In a statement issued
on Sunday, president of NGO Federation of Nepal, Dr.
Arjun Karki, has also called upon the government to
stop what he called the gross and systematic violation
of human rights and suppression of peaceful demonstration

OF SOLIDARITY FOR NEPAL

The Solidarity Programme
is scheduled to be held on 1 February 2006; Brussels
to mark (condemn!) the one-year royal takeover in
Nepal. The demonstration would be preceded by a two-hour
ministerial meeting in the morning where Dr. Arjun
Karki, SAAPE Regional Coordinator, would be addressing
on behalf of SAAPE.

and their supporters from Sri Lanka, India, Maldives,
Indonesia, Thailand and Somalia gathered and discussed
the post-tsunami rebuilding processes in the 6 affected
