SAAPE Press Conference in
Dhaka

members of the Dokshin Asia Daridra Bimochan Jote (South Asia
Alliance for Poverty Eradication-SAAPE) held a press conference
at the National Press Club in Dhaka on 11 July 2005 to share
its concerns and action agenda discussed and adopted in the
third AGM of SAAPE held in Kandy.
It was well attended by representatives of the mass media.
Mohiuddin Ahmad (CDL) read out a written statement at the outset,
while Waliur Rahman (Former Foreign Secretary), Prof. Gitiara
Nasrin (Dhaka University), Rezaul Karim Chowdhury (Campaign
for Good Governance) and Tariq Ali (Liberation War Museum) responded
to questions and comments. On the following day (12 July), several
national dailies covered the conference. The Daily Star brought
out a three-column story titled "Corruption main hurdle
to poverty alleviation - SAAPE members tell press conference",
the Bhorer Kagoj came with a double-column story with a title
"Neo-liberal policy in the name of free market economy
is increasing poverty in South Asia", while the daily Sangbad
published a double-column news entitled "Call for resisting
neo-liberal policies in the name of poverty eradication".
