Struggle for Grassroots Democracy: A South Asian Perspective

2nd SAAPE General Assembly

1-3 July 2006, Kathmandu, Nepal

The next SAAPE Annual General Assembly (GA) is being held on 2-3 July 2006 in Kathmandu, Nepal . The GA will be preceded by a one day meeting on 2nd during which Seminar would be organised. Bearing in mind the recent historical achievement of the Nepalese people, we have decide to organise a seminar on the theme of 'Grass Roots Democracy". It would include key-note speakers and activists who participated in the recent people's movement in Nepal, as well as speakers from other countries, specifically youth representatives involved in grass-roots democratic activities. It could also include a sharing session on strategic planning for regional campaigning.

The GA itself will focus on the SAAPE issues and will be attended by about 130 representatives of peasant organisations, women's groups, NGOs, trade unions, grassroots social movements and others such as independent academics and human rights activists. Representatives from European NGOs and members from other organisations such as HIVOS, NOVIB, Social Watch, APMDD and EUROSTEP are also expected to participate as observers. The concept note and programme agenda would be uploaded soon.

In the meantime, if you have any further questions about SAAPE or the forthcoming meetings then please do not hesitate to contact - Ms. Ruchi Lohani - on ruchi@rrn.org.np or 977 1 4415418/4422153 or Ms. Prerna Bomzan on prerna@rrn.org.np or Ms. Premkala Nembang on pkala@rrn.org.np.
